Privacy

Applies to the Campgroundless website and iPhone app. Last updated October 2026.

Summary

Campgroundless has no accounts, analytics, advertising, or tracking. We do not run a server that receives your data. Everything you save stays on your device.

Location

If you tap Use my location, your device's GPS position is used only to center the map and measure distances on your device. It is never saved, uploaded, or shared. You can turn off location access at any time in your device settings.

Data saved on your device

Settings, recent searches, field notes, saved places, and offline map areas are stored only on your device (browser storage on the website, app storage in the iPhone app). Deleting the app, clearing site data, or using the delete buttons removes them. Campgroundless does not back them up; you can export settings, saved locations and notes, and recent searches to a backup file, or export saved locations as a GPX, KML, GeoJSON, or CSV file, from Settings. Imported location files are read on your device and are not uploaded. That file stays wherever you save or share it, contains your notes' locations (and API keys only if you choose to include them), and should be kept private.

Requests to map and data providers

To show the map, your device requests map images and land records directly from public providers, including USGS, the USDA Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Census Bureau, Esri ArcGIS Online, OpenFreeMap, and OpenStreetMap (Nominatim for place search, or Photon by komoot if you choose it in Settings). Like any website, these providers receive your IP address and the map area or search text requested, under their own privacy policies. Place searches send only the text you type.

Shared notes

When you share a field note, its text and position are encoded in the link itself. Anyone with the link can read it. Nothing is uploaded to Campgroundless.

Children

Campgroundless does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.
